Gem Types and Locations

There are several different types of gems with varying degrees of how valuable they are and difficult to obtain. This section of the guide gives you a list of which are the least and most valuable as well as a brief description of the gems themselves and where to find them.

Gems in ascending order of value are;

  • Beryl fragment (lowest value)

  • Coral fragment

  • Ruby fragment

  • Talos fragment

  • Hybrasyl fragments (highest value)

Beryl

This is a yellow mineral gem that is most commonly found being mined by the Grimlok and Goblins of Pravat Cave. Deep within the dungeon of Abel, beryl in its any state can be discovered, being hoarded by the mysterious Polyps that dwell there. It is a long documented behaviour but it is not known why. Dhole Larva of the first floors of Cthonic Remains also carry this gem inside their mouths, it is believed that they eat dirt where some loose beryls are accidentally ingested, Aislings then go on to discover beryls within the creature.

This gemstone is normally a clear colour, however, it is the impurities within the stone itself that lend it some colour. Beryl shines a gorgeous colour in varying hues of yellow. The varieties found in Temuair are known as a heliodor type of gem.

It is most commonly used in the design of beryl earrings which can be bought from the Mileth armoury and Piet bank. Undine armoury also sells some beryl rings, good for someone around insight seven to wear on their adventures.

Coral

Coral gemstones in various forms can only be found in Pravat Cave. This is another gem stone that is mined by the Goblins and Grimlok who reside there.

This stone is organic and formed by tiny living things we cannot see with the naked eye, living on the rock of the cave walls. This mixes in with rainwater that runs down from the roof of the caverns, and trickles through the walls and crystallizes with microscopic organisms and changes the structure of the coral, to become what the Grimlok mine to this very day.

It is not yet discovered how the stone comes to be a blue colour we have come to know over the Deochs, as natural coral is more of a reddish or pinkish hue. I believe some magical residue from magical blasts (of spells over the many Deochs) against the walls of Pravat Cave itself are responsible for the blue colour.

Coral is used in the design of coral rings and coral earrings, which many priests require as part of their spell requirements. These items can be purchased from Abel armoury, Undine armoury and Mileth armoury as well as the Mileth alchemists store.

Ruby

A ruby is one of the more sought after and most expensive gems. Once polished to a high shine, the deep ruby red colour is magnificent.

Again, the residents of Pravat Cave mine this regularly as Pravat Cave is a good source for gems. Another strange place to find raw rubies, is on the body of Scarlet beetles from Cthonic Ruins. The Scarlet beetle rubs itself against the rough cavernous walls of its natural habitat. This can cause raw rubies to fall into the various parts of its outer body.

The gemstone can be found in the following items which are sold, or crafted and even found in some dungeons of sorts;

Ruby earrings, ruby rings, leather ruby gauntlets, feathered ruby earrings, blazed ruby earrings, ruby pearl necklace.

On an unrelated note, it has been rumoured that rogues have been able to find rubies hidden throughout the Mileth Crypt in the locked chests. My siblings have never personally been able to pick the long rusted locks of those chests but it has been rumoured around Temuair that this is a rare find from those chests.

Talgonite

Talgonite is material that is found to be hoarded by Dark Clerics in the depths of the Cthonic Remains, or strangely enough, from the horrifying monsters who dwell in the dark maze hidden under Loures castle. Talgonite is referred to commonly as talgonite or talos once it is polished.

This material is craved by Dark Clerics as it can be forged into powerful weapons, but they have not figured out a way to bend it to their purposes yet.

Creatures that lure young Aislings within the Dark Maze underneath Loures castle also manage to gather this material, it is not known why but I speculate the Nightgaunts take it elsewhere as there isn’t much to be found in the Dark Maze itself.

The Nightgaunts being dark creatures, I believe the talgonite they fly elsewhere has been fashioned into Dark Shields as part of the reincarnation of Chadul himself.

It is rumoured that the Chandi Mukuls of Mehadi swamp have been known to carry fragments of talgonite. At a tavern it was explained that they sometimes take the fragments from those Aislings who are unlucky enough to stumble upon them in their Swamp.

The Dwarves of Abel crypt however have been able to forge talgonite into mighty axes which they wield.

Aislings use talgonite in exchange for special knowledge to unlock the secrets to the ritual of Ascension, which will be explained a little more in another section of this tome.

Hybrasyl

Hybrasyl is the most valuable of all the gems in the lands of Temuair. Even some of the strange Mundanes from the mysterious Medenian continent request this gem at times. This precious metal can only be found deep in Cthonic Remains.

Very few mummies travel to the depths of the Unseelie Satyr and Fomorian Horror to steal a few fragments. Mummies use the shine of the hybrasyl to lure young Aislings to them as they’re not fast enough for the chase.

The claws of the Unseelie Satyr and Fomorian Horror are strong enough to break through the rock walls which is why deep into the bowels of Cthonic Remains, the thirtieth floor, is one of the best places to find this precious metal.

Similar to talgonite, the Mukul have sometimes taken hybrasyl fragments from Aislings as well. There is no other way for them to acquire this precious metal. It is heard that they have used the material in spells to ward off Aislings. I read this a long time ago in a musty tome on the shelves of Loures library, and upon a discussion with a fellow priest, he explained how he had stumbled upon some fragments of the material through his journey to pluck the Sevti blossom for the young of Loures Castle.

A few items and weapons are made from this metal, such as various Hybrasyl belts imbued with the four elements of Temuair.

There is also the awesome Hybrasyl Axe which rests in the grip of the fierce Carnun Champions located in the fields of Undine.

Lastly, the simply amazing replica weapons that are forged for those Aislings who have defeated Arsaidh Aon also requires much of this metal in the difficult crafting process.
